Audience at the China Digital Nomad Conference main stage

Counting from the day I left the corporate world, it's somehow been four full years — an entire second university, attended without noticing. New friends are always curious about my path — a literally-no-calculus liberal arts grad — "so what did you do before?" As 2026 arrives, let me dust off the past; maybe it sparks something for you.

I was once a Beijing drifter and a Shanghai drifter — lived in Xierqi, lived in Jing'an, and I'm lucky to have had that corporate chapter. After leaving, dealing with ever more different people and colliding with the world again and again, I slowly grew new branches of myself.

In these four years: 1️⃣ My footprints covered Dali, Chiang Mai, and Bali, wandering through digital nomad circles, indie developer circles, and blockchain communities — then gradually finding my own voice: the first China Digital Nomad Conference in Guangzhou, the second in Huangshan, and in 2025 a co-built offline nomad community, tasting every flavor of it. The closest friends I have today, the ones who changed me most, were nearly all met inside these communities and projects. Without this chapter, there is no present me.

2️⃣ More and more overseas friends are curious about China. At the first post-pandemic Nomad Summit, I hosted and spoke at the only side event about Chinese digital nomads; later I took ColivePlanet partners to visit Shenzhen's tech companies; recently, at the muShanghai Tech Burning Man, I gathered with a thousand players from home and abroad. These journeys let me sit face-to-face with front-line developers and founders, and deepen bonds with project initiators who trust me. More importantly — I've gotten used to hearing foreigners say "You're the best."

3️⃣ Maybe AI is a bubble — but it has genuinely let me feel the thrill of riding the wave. These days I'm devoted to a little crab that led me into the astonishing world of AI. Right now I focus on AI model aggregation and a GEO Agent business. It's as if I've re-lived freshman through senior year, with "teachers" of different subjects passing on lessons hand to hand, letting me build a new worldview while exploring. Here is the first subject — the one that taught me the most.

Psychology, Lesson 1: Every Choice Is Self-Expression 心理学科 1:无论选择 A 或 B,都是自我本性的一种表达

Our words, our bodies, our refusals, our unconscious hesitations — all of it is expression. This was one of my biggest realizations this year, and it came from helping my English tutor recruit students. Many friends know I've practiced spoken English intensively for nearly two years — it brought opportunities and confidence — so people often ask for my tutor (only ¥70 an hour, far below market rate for the level).

At a sharing session I met a woman who kept asking how to practice speaking, then messaged me question after question: Can the tutor teach business English? Is it online? Could a lesson be just 30 minutes? I answered everything; when I mentioned the trial class cost a few dozen yuan, she never replied again. No judgment — but through her hesitation, circling, and final silent refusal, I suddenly saw: this goal wasn't painful enough for her, not yet a necessity. She had no "I'm on stage tomorrow" urgency. She could wait — until the day she has to learn.

Me, back then? It was precisely because a full-English event was one month away — the sting of "I'm afraid I'll fail" — that I started sitting at my desk every single day. How often, facing things that seem neither important nor urgent, do we also choose silence? I keep shouting about becoming a serious creator and never act on it (laughs). "Opportunity favors the prepared" — but the deadline of that "preparation" is often too far to see, so we quietly give up the possibility, give up planting the seed. If I hadn't started that painful, intensive practice two years ago, would today's opportunities exist? Choosing not to do something is also a choice — and it broadcasts our current feelings and our world.

Psychology, Lesson 2: Truly Expressive, Life-Filled People Will Inevitably "Found" Something

A tie-dye shop in Dali or a factory in Shenzhen; physical or virtual; tiny or huge — each carries its founder's own expression, and in essence there's no difference. "Only mulberry silk, ever" or "hand-sewn by old masters only"; "hidden in the alleys, no influencer visits" or "chasing traffic, never repeat customers"… "Beyond taste there is nothing" — a line from an essay on surviving the AI era — applies here too. The moment a brand is born, it carries out the shout inside its founder's heart. Every founder who has ever moved me had, without exception, their own choices and their own insistence.

Psychology, Lesson 3: No One Is Coming 3:No one is coming

"Circumstances turn with the mind." Every setback, joy, and wound along the way is a moment to see yourself through the external — no "other person" makes you become anything; outside events only water the seeds already deep within. A few months ago the business was growing fast and I was on it at least 12 hours a day — genuinely happy, yet no longer "me." Thinking about it over meals, dreaming about it at night: I had become a machine.

It got better. How? I caught my own fixed belief — "I must sacrifice all my time and energy to keep the business running at full speed" — and in that instant I saw my "dedication" wasn't dedication at all, just fear: fear of losing control, fear of loss. Only when I admitted I can't control everything, and could accept with some calm that "the business could end at any moment," did I truly step off that speeding train. When I later shared the whole inner journey with a housemate, she was shocked: "All I noticed lately was your sour face — all that happened?!" Indeed. Inside, I had crossed eighty-one trials; outside, the world still saw the expressionless Monkey King pinned under the mountain. 🤣

To be continued… Note: this is not a series promoting "the wilderness." I'm deeply grateful for my corporate years — they taught me professionalism and how to see the world from inside a large organization. Off the rails, I've lived through more panic and fear than I ever imagined — a high-intensity experiment in human flourishing. If you're curious about this experiment, follow along. to be continued...
